WCCOA is a cost-effective, trusted nonprofit that serves Washington County's seniors, adults with disabilities and their families.

A famous religious leader once said, “The test of a people is how it behaves toward the old... The affection and care for the old, the incurable, the helpless are the true gold mines of a culture.”

Most Washington County seniors have worked hard all their lives and seek help only as a last resort. We’ve had proud husbands and wives break down in our offices describing how they've had to choose between food and life-saving medicines, between rent, utilities and doctor visits.

Living on a limited income can be a struggle, especially when traditional pensions and retirement benefits are dwindling. The WCCOA helps ease the financial burdens on seniors by offering programs and services to those who meet eligibility standards. The benefits received go toward basic services like food, shelter, medical care and medications. Your support will help make those benefits available.

The WCCOA has 30 programs, among which Meals on Wheels is one of the most recognizable. We deliver 140 freshly-prepared, hot meals to the homebound and frail throughout the County each weekday. Some recipients may need the service temporarily, for instance, while recovering from major surgery. Some with mobility limitations or increasing confusion may need it on a longer term basis. Many recipients would likely go hungry without this vital service. Volunteers provide an informal safety check, a reassuring smile and a quick chat along with a nutrious meal. Sadly, for some recipients, this is the only human interaction they have all day. The rising costs of food and fuel have stretched our budgets to the limit and there is often a waitlist for Meals on Wheels. Your donation can help remove a senior from the waitlist and turn them into a meal recipient!

The vast majority of seniors wish to age at home, not only because it’s less expensive than institutionalized care facilities, but also because they feel connected to their own neighborhoods. Often, with minor supports, a frail senior can remain in their home and avoid placement in an assisted living or a nursing home. We offer in-home supports like meal preparation and help with bathing and dressing.

Our Goal - Keeping Our Seniors Safe, Healthy and Independent

The WCCOA provides support and services that enable seniors and adults with disabilities to live self-sufficiently and at home for as long as possible. We are a trusted resource for families and caregivers who struggle to care for a loved one. We also provide respite care so that caregivers can experience a well-deserved break to take care of personal business, go to work or simply relax.

Our Priority - Adults with Low-income and/or Disabilities

In Washington County 27% of households consisting of those 65 or older live on less than $20,000 a year. In the 75 and older age group, at least half have one life-limiting disability. We maximize limited incomes to address basic needs of food, shelter, medication and long-term care for chronic and disabling conditions. We need your help to continue to serve some of our most vulnerable citizens.

Our Challenge - Rapid Growth in the Aging Population and Budget Cuts

The Baby Boomer population is entering senior years and older adults are living longer. We now have more people over age 60 than the entire kindergarten through 12th grade population in Washington County. BY 2020, 1 in 4 residents will be seniors.

The WCCOA leverages federal and state funding to serve the swelling senior population of Washington County. We are faced with serving a growing demographic with fewer private and public funding resources. As a nonprofit, the WCCOA operates cost–effectively, relying heavily on the dedication of our volunteers. Now, more than ever, we need your help!

An Ounce of Prevention

Rates of chronic disease such as COPD, arthritis, diabetes and heart disease are high in our County. We know that 8 out of every 10 healthcare dollars are spent on chronic disease. Our nutrition, exercise and wellness programs can help prevent or manage life-threatening conditions and save money too. We help walk eligible seniors through all parts of Medicare, helping them make informed decisions. Your donation will make an impact!

Health, independence, financial well-being and social connectedness are vital to an aging person’s quality of life. We’re here to help create a County for all ages. Please make a donation today! Every dollar helps wider the circle of care.
